Deaf Awareness Training

Our Deaf training is carried out by our Deaf Led team, they have first-hand experience of the barriers faced by the Def community

Our Deaf Led team understands the importance of Deaf culture and knows from personal experience the issues faced by Deaf people and the best advice and support to overcome these. They can support your business in becoming Deaf aware through the delivery of bespoke training and awareness courses for your employees.

Deaf Awareness Training

This Practical exercise-based session raisies awareness of Deaf Culture and the barriers Deaf people face. Our experienced trainer is a Deaf sign language user offering informed knowledge and lived experience to enrich the learning.

We offer a half day or full day session, working in small groups and pairs, delegates use humour-based exercises to discuss access issues. Course includes a brief introduction to British Sign Language within the afternoon session.

Lipreading Classes

The single biggest barrier facing people with a hearing loss is difficulty with communication and understanding what is being said. Our sight and hearing loss specialist team run lipreading classes for everyone, not just those with a hearing impairment but for individuals and organisations looking to overcome communication barriers caused by hearing loss.

These sessions are not just about learning the skills to lipread, but also about meeting and sharing experiences in an environment where everybody understands how your hearing loss affects your everyday life.

Learn British Sign Language (BSL) and / or Short Workshop in Basic BSL signs

This eighteen week course takes place at our offices in Exeter and is designed to enable you to communicate with Deaf people using British Sign Language (BSL) at Level 1 standard.

This course is provided by our BSL accredited partner ‘Sign with Beth’. Please contact Beth directly for more information and to book.

Alternatively, our Deaf Led team offers short workshops in learning basic British Sign Language signs. This learning empowers individuals and staff to feel confident when communicating with a Deaf employee or customer.

In Other Words – Deaf (BSL users) accessible Information Workshop

Our ‘In Other Words’ workshops are run by our Deaf Led Team who are British Sign Language users and therefore have lived experience of the communication barriers Deaf people face.

These practical exercise based sessions demonstrate the impact of communication not being accessible to Deaf people and how organisations can improve the information they create to effectively engage with Deaf people, and meet legislative information standards.

Attendees will have an increased understanding of how to engage effectively with Deaf people, know the key best practice communication rules and an understanding of the potential of using technology.

More Than Words – Accessible Information Training

We create alternative format documentation for businesses, these alternative formats include visual guides, easy read guides and audio books. We also provide practical exercise based training to groups or one on one on why and how to create accessible information.

These sessions demonstrate the impact of barriers to accessing information for disabled people and members of the Deaf Community. Trainers provide hints and tips on how to create best practice accessible information to effectively engage with disabled people. Attendees will learn the basic rules to meet legislative information standards when creating easy to understand information for customers and staff.

How to Run Inclusive Meetings Workshop

We run accessible meetings all the time both from our accessible offices or online. Let our experienced team train you and your staff on how to prepare and facilitate inclusive meetings such as service user steering groups / consultations and staff meetings with disabled staff / volunteers.
